about

We started rehearsing songs for this record back in the fall of 2009. That winter, we began recording drum tracks at The Woods here in Portland. The venue, which used to be an old funeral chapel, has amazing acoustics, and the management was kind enough to let us use their space during the day when no shows were going on. I knew drummer Pete Van Dyck from one of my favorite bands back in Massachusetts (The Amity Front), and he laid down the foundational rhythm tracks for us to build upon.

The bulk of 2010 was spent meticulously tracking with David Fuller, who plays accordion for us and also happens to be one of the best recording engineers in town. With his portable recording setup, we bounced around to various basements and live rooms in Portland, choosing our location by what sound we were trying to get on a particular track.

Once the basic tracks were laid down, we started bringing in guest musicians like Jake Jolliff (Joy Kills Sorrow) on mandolin, Bryan Free on organ, Nate Purcelley (Deepest Darkest) on trumpet, and Christy Kuiken (Pacific Crest Wind Symphony) on vibraphone.

We also fortunate enough to work with the amazing Wendy Goodwin (of Effesenden Music), who wrote lush string arrangements for a few of the songs and played violin on the record. Cellist Kendra Carpenter filled out the rest of our string parts, resulting in a beautiful orchestral sound scape.
